Mike Tyson's Fight with Jake Paul Postponed Due to Illness

Illness Delays Highly Anticipated Match

Mike Tyson's fight with Jake Paul has been postponed after Tyson, 57, fell ill on a flight last weekend. The two fighters announced on Friday that they will announce a new date next week. Originally, they were scheduled to meet on July 20 in Arlington, Texas.

In-Flight Health Scare

Tyson became nauseous and dizzy during the final hour of his flight from Miami to Los Angeles last Sunday. When the plane landed, first responders attended to the former heavyweight champion. Tyson's team later said the illness was due to an ulcer problem.

Medical Recommendations

During a follow-up consultation on Thursday, medical professionals recommended that Tyson do minimal to light training for the next few weeks before returning to full training with no limitations. "Mike is advised to take it easy for a while," the fight's promoters said.

Tyson's Training and Statement

Tyson hasn't fought professionally since June 2005 but has been training regularly for years. He fought Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition match in Los Angeles in November 2020. In a statement, Tyson said, "My body is in better shape than it has been since the 1990s, and I will be back to full training soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone's patience and can't wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year."

Fight Details and Ticket Information

Texas boxing officials have sanctioned Tyson's fight with Paul as a legitimate bout with eight 2-minute rounds and unusually heavy gloves. Tyson will turn 58 before the fight, which will be streamed on Netflix, promising a big payday for both fighters. Tickets already purchased for the event, set to be held at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium, will be honored on the new fight date, which is also expected to be in Arlington.

Jake Paul's Response

Jake Paul, the 27-year-old YouTube star who has successfully turned to prizefighting, mostly by fighting mixed martial artists and journeymen boxers, supported the postponement. "I fully support postponing the event so Mike Tyson has no excuses come fight night," Paul said. "My fans know I don't want to face Iron Mike at anything but his best, but let there be no mistake: When he steps into the ring with me, I will be ready to claim my W with a sensational finish."

The fight postponement, while disappointing, ensures that both fighters will be at their best for what promises to be an exciting showdown later this year.
